Respite Care for Young Adults
Individuals residing in Montgomery County who are unpaid, live-in, primary caregivers for a young adult with intellectual/developmental disabilities or challenging behaviors may apply for respite care from The Arc Montgomery County. Caregiving is a demanding job and caregivers need occasional breaks ("respite") so they can tend to the needs of other families or their own needs, and return to their caregiving duties refreshed.
Our Respite Services program can provide short-term relief for a few hours, a day, a weekend, or sometimes longer. However, respite care is not a substitute for ongoing care or alternative child care; it's just one important part of the overall support system families need to keep loved ones at home. Families can choose from many respite care venues, including the family home, community and recreational program facilities, and camps.
Respite Services is an income-based program that may provide a full or partial subsidy to pay a Respite Care Provider (RCP), but it is not an entitlement. Eligibility for a respite care subsidy is based on income and the Respite Care Services Fee Scale. The subsidy rate when applying for respite care for young adults age 17 and under is based on the household income, less approved out-of-pocket expenses. The subsidy rate when applying for respite care for young adults age 18 and over is based on his/her income alone.
Eligibility for a subsidy does not guarantee funds for each respite occasion requested. There is limited funding for respite care and our goal is to assist as many families as possible each month. Even if a family doesn't qualify for a subsidy, they are provided with referrals to screened, trained and qualified respite care providers and information about additional community resources.
To apply for services, complete the correct application based on the young adult's age and submit it by mail or secure (password protected) email to our office. Please include all supporting documents as required.
